Configure Azure backup for DPM data

Updated: May 13, 2016

Applies To: System Center 2012 SP1 - Data Protection Manager, System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager

In addition to backing up data to disk and tape, you can back up data to the Azure cloud for short and long-term storage, using the Azure Backup service. This is useful in a couple of DPM deployment scenarios:

  • DPM is deployed on-premises as a physical server or virtual machine—If you deploy DPM as a physical server or as an on-premises Hyper-V virtual machine you can back up data with Azure Backup in addition to backing data up to disk and tape.

  • DPM is deployed as a virtual machine in Azure—If DPM is deployed as an Azure virtual machine (possible from System Center 2012 R2 with Update 3) you can back up data to Azure disks attached to the DPM Azure virtual machine and then offload data storage with backup to Azure Backup.

Why should I use Azure Backup?

  • For on-premises DPM deployment, Azure Backup provides a simple method of offsite storage. You can store data with Azure up to 3360 days.

  • When DPM is deployed as an Azure virtual machine, you can offload storage to Azure Backup from the Azure disk, allowing you to scale up by storing older data in Azure Backup and new data on disk.

How do I deploy it?

  1. Learn about deployment requirements and limitations

  2. Complete the deployment steps. You'll need to create a Backup Vault, download credentials for the vault, install the Backup agent on DPM servers that have data you want to back up to Azure, and register each server in the vault..

  3. Configure DPM protection groups to use Azure Backup for data storage.
